The draft law on voluntary military registration of women was supported in the first reading
The Council has approved a bill that allows women, if they wish, to register for military service and undergo basic military training.
The Verkhovna Rada approved in the first reading the bill №12076, which, in particular, provides for the mobilization of women who have expressed a desire to undergo basic military training.
This was reported by Member of Parliament Yaroslav Zheleznyak.
«№12076 – on amendments to the law «On Military Duty and Service» regarding medical registration during the preparation of draftees. Adopted as a basis (249)», – stated Zheleznyak.
What the bill provides
According to this bill, presented by the Cabinet of Ministers on September 27, it is proposed that women who are suitable for military service based on health and age, and wish to undergo basic military training, will be registered for military service immediately before the start of the service.
Upon completion of basic military training, the women released from military service will be registered in the military register of reservists.
Regarding women with medical education
A separate provision of the law provides for mandatory registration for women with medical or pharmaceutical education. In wartime, they may be called to service or involved in defence works with their voluntary consent.
Women with specialties related to the military can also register at their own will.
The bill also changes the procedure for placing draftees on military registration. Currently, men who have turned 17 are subject to mobilization from January to March.
The Cabinet proposes to establish the period from January 1 to July 31. Men who are 17 years old can register for military service through the Unified State Register of Draftees, Reservists, and Military Obligors, or personally at the Territorial Recruitment and Social Support Center. Valid reasons for not undergoing electronic identification or not appearing at the TRC can be:
- illness;
- natural disasters;
- residing or being during the special period in temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine where hostilities are ongoing.
If men at the age of 17 have not registered for military service, they are only registered after a personal appearance at the TRC with simultaneous imposition of responsibility in accordance with the law, provided they have reached the age of 18.
