The military serviceman who committed AWOL and fled to Romania was apprehended at the border

At the border, a serviceman who had deserted in early October and fled to Romania was detained. However, upon learning about his brother’s mobilization, he decided to return to the ranks of the Ukrainian Defence Forces.

This incident was reported by the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine. "The way back: the serviceman returned to the Armed Forces of Ukraine after leaving his unit without permission (AWOL) and illegally crossing the border," the report stated.

The SBGSU noted that the man, who illegally crossed the border from Romania into Ukraine, was detained.

He turned out to be a citizen of Ukraine who had gone AWOL in early October.

However, after learning about his brother’s mobilization, he realized he could not stay abroad.

By taking advantage of a new provision in Article 401 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which allows avoiding punishment for going AWOL, the serviceman was given the opportunity to return to the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
