Ukraine honors the memory of the defenders of Donetsk airport: 10 years of the cyborgs’ feat

In Ukraine, January 20 is commemorated as the Day of Remembrance of the Defenders of Donetsk Airport. This month marks 10 years since the conclusion of the battles for the airfield.

Under incredibly harsh conditions, in almost complete encirclement, with minimal armament and under constant Russian shelling, the cyborgs held the defense of Donetsk Airport. It became one of the symbols of resistance against Russian occupiers.

The battles for Donetsk Airport lasted from May 26, 2014, to January 22, 2015, a total of 242 days. Volunteers and medics also participated in the defense, so on the Day of Remembrance of the Cyborgs, their memory is also honored. According to official data, more than 200 military personnel died defending Donetsk Airport.

As it is known, taking advantage of another "truce," the Russians mined and blew up the supports of the last terminal, destroying it completely. During the defense of the airport, dozens of tons of Grads, heavy artillery shells, and Russian ammunition flew at this object almost daily. Usually over the heads of peaceful Donetsk residents, as the terrorists, under the instructions of their leader, hid behind their backs. "People endured – concrete did not," is how Ukrainian defenders describe this event.
