On the night of Monday, February 3, drones from the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) and Special Operations Forces (SOF) attacked the Volgograd oil refinery and the Astrakhan gas processing plant in Russia.

This was reported by sources in the SSU.

According to the sources, at the Volgograd plant, SSU and SOF drones "wowed" the flare systems, primary processing units #2 and #3, as well as technological units #20 and #21.

At the Astrakhan gas processing plant, the gas condensate processing complex was damaged. A fire is ongoing there, the plant’s operation has been halted, and the workers have been evacuated.

It is worth noting that both affected facilities are major fuel producers for the Russian army. The Volgograd oil refinery processes nearly 6% of all oil in Russia, while the Astrakhan gas processing plant is one of the key energy facilities in Russia, processing 12 billion cubic meters of gas condensate annually.

"This is already the fifth successful special operation by the SBU since the beginning of the year targeting oil refineries and other Russian enterprises working for the defense industry and producing fuel for the Russian army. The drone sanction policy proves its effectiveness," an informed source in the SBU noted.

General Staff’s Statement

The General Staff noted that the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the Security Service of Ukraine, in cooperation with other parts of the Defense Forces, targeted the Volgograd oil refinery, "Lukoil-Volgogradneftepererabotka" and the Astrakhan gas processing plant on the night of February 3.

According to preliminary data, the primary processing units at the plant in the Volgograd region were damaged. A fire is ongoing at the Astrakhan gas processing plant, and the facility’s operations have been halted.

The results of the strike and the extent of the damage are still being clarified.

Statement from the SOF

The Special Operations Forces clarified that the authorities of the Volgograd region, which is located more than 500 kilometers from territory controlled by the Ukrainian army, declared a "red" level of danger and closed the "Volgograd" airport after dozens of explosions.

They also noted that the Astrakhan gas processing plant is one of Russia’s key energy enterprises. It processes 12 billion cubic meters of gas condensate annually.

"There, Ukrainian drones, which flew about 1,000 kilometers, damaged the gas condensate processing complex. The fire at the strategic site for the enemy’s army and economy is still ongoing. The plant’s operations have been halted," the statement said.
