In Chernihiv, an 85-year-old resident gave a fraudster 109,000 hryvnias

The Chernihiv District Police Department quickly identified the perpetrator who seized the savings of a pensioner under the false pretense of rescuing her acquaintance, who was allegedly injured in a car accident. The police swiftly conducted a range of operational and investigative measures and detained the fraudster in the Kyiv region.

The report of the crime was received by the Chernihiv police during the day on February 1 from the neighbor of the victimized pensioner.

According to the applicant, an alleged social worker, who supposedly serves her, called the 85-year-old Chernihiv resident on her home phone, asking for help. The woman claimed that she had received serious injuries in a car accident, and urgently needed funds for medical treatment.

The pensioner immediately agreed to help the imaginary "social worker," who said that her brother would come for the money.

Twenty minutes after the conversation, an unknown man arrived at the victim’s home. The pensioner handed over her savings — 109,000 hryvnias, and the stranger left immediately.

The woman told her neighbor about the incident. The neighbor immediately confirmed that the social worker was at home in good health and reported it to the police.

Detectives of the criminal police of the Chernihiv District Police Department identified the perpetrator and his entire route from the moment of the crime within a few hours. The man was detained in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine and placed in a temporary detention facility.

Investigators of the Chernihiv District Police Department, under the procedural guidance of the Chernihiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, informed the perpetrator of the suspicion under Part 2 of Article 190 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (fraud committed by prior conspiracy by a group of persons).

Pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
