Alina Mykhailova sharply commented on contracts for 18-24-year-olds: "This is discrimination"
Combat unit medic Alina Mykhailova expressed her reaction to the proposal for preferential annual contracts in the Armed Forces of Ukraine for citizens aged 18–24. She characterized this decision as unfairness and discrimination.
The head of the ULF medical service of the First Separate Assault Battalion Da Vinci’s Wolves named after Dmytro Kotsyubaylo wrote on her Facebook page on Wednesday, February 12.
"Instead of properly appreciating those who are already in the ranks, risking their lives since 2014 or 2022, the state simply ignores their needs. Those who took up arms from the first days of the war and set their lives aside are now left out. Their loyalty is taken for granted, and their silence is seen as consent," Mykhailova remarked.
She added that such a law "undermines the essence of military service" in a country that is at war. According to her, it is "not about defending the country anymore, but about a profitable contract."
"When people went to fight in 2014, they went in slippers with their grandfathers’ rifles because there were no other options. In 2022, people left offices, factories, and shops to go to the front in jeans and sneakers because they understood it’s about the homeland, not money. And now we’re assured that we could have waited, signed a contract, and fought for a year for a million? That it’s now a choice — to go or not to go? If such an opportunity had existed in 2022, we would have already lost this war," the servicemember believes.
According to Mykhailova, now it is impossible "to sell military service as an ordinary labor market when you don’t even give those who are already fighting the opportunity to know when and how they can return to normal life."
