The Armed Forces of Ukraine revealed the advantages of the self-propelled howitzer "Bohdana-BG"
Ukrainian artillerymen praised the high accuracy of the towed version of the 2S22 "Bohdana" self-propelled gun, known as "Bohdana-BG", noting that its characteristics surpass even Western counterparts. Military personnel also highlighted the endurance of the Ukrainian howitzer, which has a resource that reaches 8,000 shots.
The publication BILD released a report from a training ground where artillerymen working with the "Bohdana" shared information about the advantages of the Ukrainian howitzer. One of the soldiers, who has experience with different artillery systems, confirmed that the barrel’s wear progresses slowly, and accuracy is maintained even after 7,000–8,000 shots.
A representative from the manufacturer also explained that the key to the system’s high accuracy lies in the unique rifling of the barrel and the design of the central support, which stabilizes the gun. However, the exact parameters of the rifling remain secret. The video also shows the presence of a ballistic speed computer, presumably the 112L4, which can improve firing accuracy.
"The secret lies in the barrel’s rifling, which is classified information, including the angle and number, as well as the presence of the central support that additionally stabilizes the gun," the weapon specialists reported.
Use of Ammunition and Maintenance of the Self-Propelled Gun (SPG)
The 2S22 howitzers use both Ukrainian ammunition and those provided by Western partners. According to the military personnel, the expenditure of shells is influenced by the cohesion of the units.
The "Bohdana" self-propelled gun was developed in Ukraine, so its maintenance and repair can be conducted in the shortest possible time. According to information from the Kramatorsk Heavy Machine Tool Building Plant, production facilities are located both in Ukraine and in EU countries, which helps increase the production of the howitzers. Currently, the production rate exceeds 20 units per month. To ensure uninterrupted production, component production has been duplicated—each spare part is manufactured at least at two different enterprises.
The manufacturer officially disclosed the cost of the 2S22 "Bohdana" self-propelled gun for the first time—approximately 2.8 million euros. Belgian analysts previously estimated the howitzer at 2.3 million euros, but their projection turned out to be underestimated. Despite this, the Ukrainian SPG remains cheaper than many Western counterparts.
According to the developers, they aimed to make the system as simple as possible to operate. Electrical and hydraulic mechanisms are duplicated with mechanical analogs, simplifying maintenance. Spare parts are available within 24 hours, and any machine repair can be accomplished within 48 hours.
