Shmyhal: Ukraine lost almost half of its gas production due to winter attacks
This winter, due to intensive enemy attacks, Ukraine lost about 50% of its gas production. Currently, options to compensate for these losses are being considered, particularly through imports.
This was revealed in a statement by the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhal, during a meeting.
"This winter, the enemy launched a series of large-scale attacks on Ukraine’s gas production infrastructure, resulting in a loss of approximately 50% of the total output. Despite this, the sector has withstood and continues to reliably supply consumers with gas. Currently, we are actively working on compensating for these losses, particularly through imports," the Prime Minister noted.
Preparation for the upcoming heating season
According to Shmyhal, Ukraine has signed an agreement with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development to attract 270 million euros (307 million dollars). Specifically, Norway is providing a grant of 140 million euros (159 million dollars). These funds will be used to purchase about 1 billion cubic meters of gas.
He added that starting in 2025, Ukraine has already contracted 1.5 billion cubic meters of gas. An additional 300 million cubic meters of liquefied natural gas will be purchased from the Polish company Orlen.
"Today we are also making an important decision to accelerate domestic gas production. We are streamlining the procedure for creating energy storage facilities and constructing the facilities necessary for connection to Ukraine’s gas transmission system by private enterprises in the oil and gas sector," the Prime Minister stated.
