The G7 countries issued a joint statement: pressure on Russia, the Middle East, and security

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney presented a joint statement of G7 leaders following the G7 summit in Kananaskis, which discussed the war in Ukraine and ways to end it.

This was reported by the press service of the head of the Canadian government.

The aim of the event was to strengthen the economy, enhance security, accelerate digital transition, reinforce partnerships in response to global challenges, achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, and also commit to stability in the Middle East.

"The leaders recognized the interconnection between the crises in Ukraine, the Middle East, and the Indo-Pacific region," the statement said.

The War in Ukraine

At the summit, G7 leaders expressed their support for US President Donald Trump’s efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.

"They acknowledged that Ukraine has committed to an unconditional ceasefire and agreed that Russia must do the same. G7 leaders are determined to explore all options to put maximum pressure on Russia, including financial sanctions," the statement noted.

The G7 leaders discussed support for a sovereign and strong Ukraine, including the allocation of defense funds, as well as support for the country’s recovery and reconstruction.

The Middle East

The summit reaffirmed commitment to peace and stability in the Middle East. G7 leaders exchanged views on developments following the terrorist attacks by Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023, and the active phase of the conflict between Israel and Iran. They also discussed the importance of unhindered humanitarian aid delivery to Gaza, the release of all hostages, and a permanent ceasefire.

"They reaffirmed Israel’s right to self-defense and made it clear that Iran must never have nuclear weapons," the statement said.

A Secure Indo-Pacific Region

The G7 leaders emphasized the importance of a free, open, prosperous, and secure Indo-Pacific region. They discussed growing economic cooperation with the region. The importance of constructive and stable relations with China was emphasized. G7 leaders called on China to refrain from destabilizing activities in the East China and South China Seas and expressed concern over North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs.

  • discussed the need for economic and financial stability, technological innovations;
  • condemned foreign interference, highlighting the unacceptable threat to rights and freedoms;
  • emphasized the importance of ongoing cooperation to ensure border security and counter smuggling and the illicit circulation of synthetic drugs;
  • discussed the impacts of extreme weather events worldwide;
  • talked about ensuring the safe and responsible implementation of artificial intelligence in the public and private sectors;
  • discussed countering illegal migrant smuggling.
