Russians damaged a 19th-century synagogue in Odesa
During a nighttime attack by Russia on Odesa, the historical synagogue "Nahlas Eliezer" in the Peresyp district was damaged.
This was stated by the Chief Rabbi of Ukraine, Moshe Reuven Asman.
The building was constructed at the end of the 19th century.
"This place was a place of prayer, hope, and spiritual strength for the Jewish community of Odesa. Today we have once again witnessed how the war affects not only people but also holy places and our historical memory," wrote Moshe Reuven Asman.
The United Jewish Community of Ukraine reported that the synagogue served as a place of prayer for the Jewish community until the 1920s, but was closed during Soviet times. In 1992, the prayer hall with 25-meter ceilings was destroyed due to a collapse. Only the bakery and utility rooms were preserved.
Currently, on this territory, among the overgrown ruins, one can find the remnants of Aron HaKodesh (the holy ark) and other religious items.
Russian drones also damaged the Odesa radio market.
According to data from the Odesa Regional Prosecutor’s Office, 50 trade pavilions were damaged by fire, with 8 completely destroyed.
