Pushed onto the train tracks: A 16-year-old Ukrainian girl died in Germany

A sixteen-year-old girl was pushed under a train. In 2022, her family fled Russian-occupied Mariupol and found refuge in Thuringia.

This is reported by the German publication Stern.

On the day of the incident, an unknown man approached the police officers on the train platform and pointed them to the girl’s body.

Initially, the police assumed it was an accident, so the man was issued a warrant for arrest on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter.

However, after conducting a DNA test, traces of the man were found on the victim’s shoulder. The case was reclassified.

Investigators believe that the suspect, 31-year-old Muhammad, intentionally pushed the Ukrainian citizen, 16-year-old Liana, from the platform right in front of a freight train.

Earlier, the man had already attracted police attention due to disturbances at the station. He behaved aggressively and was therefore taken to a specialized psychiatric clinic. He was under medical supervision with a diagnosis of "paranoid schizophrenia."

Muhammad had applied for asylum in Germany, but his request was denied, and he was to be deported to Lithuania.

No connection between the man and the girl has been established.

It is known that on the day of the incident, August 11, Liana was returning home from school and was talking on the phone with her grandfather. He heard screams and immediately informed her parents.

What is known about the Ukrainian girl’s family

In July 2022, Liana’s family left Mariupol. In Geisleden (Thuringia), the municipality provided them with accommodation.

The parents went to work.

Liana has two brothers, aged 5 and 11.

Muhammad is in a closed psychiatric ward. The prosecution is checking whether he is criminally responsible.
