The leaders of the Baltic countries called on the European Union to begin negotiations with Ukraine on accession
The Presidents of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania Alar Karis, Edgars Rinkevics and Gitanas Nausėda issued a joint statement on the 20th anniversary of the Baltic countries’ accession to the European Union.
This was reported by the press service of the President of Estonia.
The heads of state of the Baltic countries noted the importance of the EU for the security of their countries. They say the Baltic states have made a strong contribution to European and transatlantic security, particularly given their geographic proximity to Russia - the most immediate threat to European and global security.
They noted that the 20th anniversary of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania’s EU membership comes at a time when Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine serves as a reminder that peace in Europe should not be taken for granted.
The presidents affirmed that “Ukraine today defends our democratic values,” and promised to continue to support Ukraine and defend a rules-based world order.
"In 1990-1991, democratic choice was put to the test in the Baltic countries. Today, Ukrainians, Moldovans and Georgians are fighting for European values and the European family as their final choice. We stand firmly on the side of those countries that share European values and the desire to be together" , they said.
The presidents of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have called on the EU to begin accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova in June this year.
“The Baltic countries are a wonderful testament to how EU membership drives remarkable modernization and economic progress. This is our reality, which we want to share,” the heads of state said in a joint statement.
