"This is not the end of the process": The EU welcomes the adoption of the law concerning NABU and SAPO

The European Commission believes that the draft law No. 13533, adopted by the Verkhovna Rada on July 31, restores key mechanisms for the independence of anti-corruption bodies in Ukraine, but does not complete the reform process in the anti-corruption sphere.

This was stated by the European Commission spokesperson, Guillaume Mercier, in response to a question from a correspondent of "European Truth".

"Regarding today’s vote, which just took place in the Verkhovna Rada, the Rada has restored the key mechanisms ensuring the independence of anti-corruption bodies. In our opinion, the new law addresses the main issues related to the independence of NABU and the SAPO," Mercier stated.

He added that the European Commission "still needs to review the final text of the law, as it has just been adopted."

"However, I want to emphasize that this is not the end of the process. Ukraine’s accession process to the EU will require continual efforts to ensure effective capacity to fight corruption and adherence to the rule of law," the European Commission spokesperson stressed.

He stressed that the EU hopes that Ukraine "will quickly fulfill these commitments and take decisive actions in the sphere of the rule of law."

"We will continue to closely monitor the situation and remain ready to support Ukraine in this process," Guillaume Mercier said.

Recall that on July 22, the Verkhovna Rada adopted the scandalous draft law No. 124214, which makes NABU and the SAPO dependent on the Prosecutor General.
