The Language Ombudsman explained whether Russian-language songs will be banned in Ukraine
The Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language, Olena Ivanovska, expressed the initiative to legally regulate the public performance of songs in Russian. She emphasized that in the conditions of a full-scale war, this issue becomes particularly relevant, as the Russian-language repertoire in public places causes strong disapproval in Ukrainian society.
This was stated by Olena Ivanovska.
The current legislation does not prohibit the use of other languages during cultural events if it does not contradict other norms. However, according to Ivanovska, at a time when Ukrainians are fighting not only for territorial integrity but also for national identity, the stage and the streets should resonate with the Ukrainian language.
In certain cities, such as Kyiv and Ternopil, local authorities have already introduced bans on the public performance of songs in Russian. However, this initiative currently lacks a nationwide legal basis and is not accompanied by sanctions.
«Clear legal regulation of this issue is necessary to ensure legal certainty for local authorities, event organizers, and performers», stressed the language ombudsman.
